Season 2 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is Disappointing...

Sorry, it is not that marvelous. I liked Season 1 a lot. Season 2 obviously has a way bigger budget, and the acting ensemble is very good, but the writing and story telling is off.  The vintage visuals are great, but the writing does not always mesh with the time period. I have not gone through the whole season yet, but that is because I am having a tough time getting through each episode.

It is disappointing because some of it is funny and works well. Then there is an episode or scene that is either too over the top or inconsistent that it gets me out of the moment. Rachel Brosnahan is a very good actor, but her character (as written) becomes grating (and I am only though the third episode of Season 2).

  1. I seem to recall seeing on Twitter that this series was loosely based on the life of Joan Rivers, "except without the humor."

    1. The first season had a character, Midge Maisel, who was charming. That gave the show some heart (I do like the parents, they and the other supporting characters gave the show some depth). She is morphing into a character that is more grating and defintely not funny. She is completely self centered and not in a good way. Even the supporting characters are off.

Joan Rivers was funny when she started. She became progressively less funny and more grating over time.

So I see the pattern developing too!

  2. She is an actress. Not an actor. Men are actors, females are actresses.
