My condolences and prayers to the victims and their families (and to the injured police). I am so sorry.
I know that the debate will come from the left that we need more gun control (or controlling President Trump's triggering tweets). Don't worry, the left and media can still blame Trump: Moving the embassy to Jerusalem is to blame... How about the chorus of Jew Hatred that the media and Democrats have supported? Is that a factor too?
Can we accept the issue is not about gun control than dealing with the mentally ill in this country? We have had a series of events recently that all have a common denominator: Crazy Evil People. I do not mean crazy or insane as in they don't know what they are doing. In most cases these violent attacks are from hateful (dare I say evil) dangerous individuals who are rational enough to come up with a course of anti social behavior. These attacks also rarely come out of the blue (granted there are exceptions), there is usually a clear pattern of anti social and criminal behavior leading up to this.
This is off topic, but the current homeless in this country is in my observation less about a lack of affordable homes, than people with mental and substance abuse problems (and both) who can't hold it together. Most are not violent murderers (although the homeless do prey on the more vulnerable among them pretty regularly), but the rash of property crimes the homeless cause and the filth and disruption they cause in cities is significant.
We have others who can managed to maintain a home (like the shooter today), but are wallowing in hate and anger. And the media attention of these stories help trigger other violently insane too. While violent murderers the one today are rare, events like this happening happening even once is too much. There is no easy answers (certainly the left's banning of AR-15s will not solve it). The courts need to start taking this seriously. I get we have to balance due process with risk--but we need to do a better job of it. The mentally ill need to be treated, monitored, and in some cases locked up.
Am I the only one who imagines that somewhere a dangerous psycho is watching TV news and saying, "Oh, I can top that"? Because it seems each day, a member of the Violent Lunatic Club tries to out-do the previous lunatic.— The Patriarch Tree (@PatriarchTree) October 27, 2018

Donald Trump is not what ails us. We are a broken people. To place this on the President’s shoulders is to abdicate our responsibility as a people — it is to say he can cause us to do what we’d otherwise not do. Our nation has a moral/spiritual problem that is festering.— Erick Erickson (@EWErickson) October 27, 2018
You find modern anti-Semitism in all walks of life. On the hard-left, the hard-right, ivory towers of universities, sermons of Louis Farrakhan, between the lines of Jeremy Corbyn's "anti-Zionism", Palestinian schoolbooks paid for by the UN, or Linda Sarsour's Women's March. Rabbi Jeffery Myers of the Tree of Life Synagogue asked this AM on CNN if Trump is welcome to visit the site of the massacre: "The President of the United States is always welcome. I'm a citizen. He's my president. He is certainly welcome."— Saagar Enjeti (@esaagar) October 29, 2018
I think most Americans really don't care about politics. They want to go about their lives without thinking about someone they don't even know thousands of miles away. Unfortunately, we had 8 years of a President and an election team that decided the best way to move their ideas was to take it to the family table. More recently, they've taken the discussion to the restaurant table. And they've also shown they are willing to ruin someone's life with obviously fake accusations about events that nobody cared about at the time, if they happened at all.
ReplyDeleteNo wonder that people on the fringe are driven to act on issues that otherwise shouldn't matter to them. I blame the media. Not because of anything Trump says, because frankly, I don't listen to politicians of any party. I don't watch the news when I can avoid it, but its become normal for the news to be blasted into every restaurant, office, and travel stop to include inside elevators and at the gas pump. Its not like other people aren't trying to shut it off, because despite all the forms of accessing viewers, actual number of viewers are in decline. Yet a few will get addicted and will let the news consume them and drive them to behaviors that are irrational. For this, I blame the media.
