Lady Godiva rode naked through the streets of Coventry to protest high taxes

Lady Godiva by John Collier (circa 1897)

Proof Positive noted the naked ladies of PETA, but they were hardly the first to use this strategy.  Lady Godiva road naked on her horse through the streets of Coventry on July 10, 1040 to protest high taxes.

Lady Godiva should be a patron saint of lower taxes!

  1. Sally Rand really grabbed the national attention when she performed at the World's Fair in Chicago in 1934, which she promoted with a Lady Godiva ride on a white horse through the streets of Chicago. Not surprisingly, she was arrested several times during the course of the fair for indecency, including four arrests in one day, although the charges were usually dismissed by the judge, since no one could prove that she was actually nude. And, also not surprisingly, the arrests and resulting publicity only served to make her more popular and increase the size of the crowds

    1. Lady Godiva was better looking...and she wasn't covered with steaks.

  3. Supposedly, Godiva actually wore peasant clothing, but, if you want to believe the legend, then you'll believe the guys who lined both sides of the road as she went past were all yelling, "Hooray for our side".

    1. Peasant clothing?

The whole point was to have a story with her riding naked through town--for the people and lower taxes. Sort of like Robin Hood, only better.
