Maple is generally straight grained (and quite nice), but when it is figured with checks, swirls and fire crossed grains it is as beautiful as the finest mahogany and walnut.

Maple is also some of the best hardwood for furniture making: very dense and closed grained. Good for table tops and cutting boards.
