  1. It's interesting to hear singers whose success was so clearly a matter of technology. Presumably Ethel M. was prized for her ability to project a song to the back row of the second balcony, but as wireless mics make that skill unnecessary, her style gives way to a completely different kind of B'way singer.

    Sinatra might've been nothing more than a singing waiter in pre-microphone days.
