Leo Tolstoy: From a young man to an old man...

I did not agree with every position he took in life, but Leo Tolstoy was no statist:  "The truth is that the State is a conspiracy designed not only to exploit, but above all to corrupt its citizens ... Henceforth, I shall never serve any government anywhere."  Here are photographs showing his transformation over his life.  He died at age 82.

Tolstoy, 1902 (age 74)

  1. He greatly admired the sermon on the mount, and supported communism. Cognitive dissonance much?

    1. Yeah there was cognitive dissonance. He did not support communism (he was not a Marxist), but he was a naive Christian anarchist who decided to live the life of a penniless wandering homeless hermit...in Russia, in the winter, and in his eighties. I think he lasted a week or two before he died.
