It is an interesting theory. Knowing George R.R. Martin's science fiction background, I always thought there was more going on in these books than "magic." 

But what is the Lord of Light R'hllor in GoT? Almost certainly it is a reference to a work by a science fiction writer that Martin greatly admired and cared for. But is it more than that in the book and TV show?  

Roger Zelazny's Lord of Light, involved an interstellar colony from Old Earth, where individuals through science become essentially reincarnated demigods. They impose a Hindu caste system (they originally came from India) and keep the underlings in their society in a medieval level of technology. Sound roughly familiar? That and the main character in that story happens to be named Sam: 

His followers called him Mahasamatman and said he was a god. He preferred to drop the Maha- and the -atman, however, and called himself Sam. He never claimed to be a god, but then he never claimed not to be a god.

Samwell Tarly has been speculated to be the narrator of GoT/ASOIAF. Maybe there is more to him than that.

GoT only has seven episodes to resolve all of this.  Not a lot of time for a tv show, but this is more like an approximate 10 hour long movie remaining.

Ann Counter doubts the shooter was a professional gambler. Speculation (he did play a lot in the casinos), but she has a point. Casinos are not in the business of losing money and will retire video gaming machines that pay out too much.

There are people who claim by careful machine selection and playing the progressives, and knowing the percentage odds make money at video poker. But to make it work is a full time job (and you can make a decent living) but not the type of thing that will typically generate multi-millions as has been reported for Paddock. If you are playing a lot, and know your odds and are not reckless, you can basically not lose money (or make a little) and get plenty of comps to make it worthwhile.  But it is unlikely you will rake in millions.

The outcome of this crime is horrible, but the underlying facts are so odd and atypical (compared to other mass shootings). While the time line keeps changing, we still do not have answers.

Mandalay Bay, where the shooting was, is a MGM property. Wynn's hotels are not that far away.  Steve Wynn admitted they tracked Paddock (he played there frequently), as they do many players, but there was nothing exceptional about him. Wynn also said no one in his casino ever saw Paddock drink.  Granted, I would not expect Paddock to drink while playing, but he did get plenty of comps and opportunities to drink when he was not playing. Others claim he drank heavily. What gives?

You got to wonder if stories like this are real or planted. There is a lot money being bet on this fight and the bookies and Sports Books love that so many will go with the Irish guy. Unless of course McGregor wins. Then again, hubris can get anyone.

While HBO should do fine with Game of Thrones, Mayweather is sticking it to HBO on this fight.

Battleship: At least one of the reviews is funny...

I did not realize this movie was actually based on the Hasbro game (I do like the game).  And with this primer of Battleship game theory from Slate, now I can win every time!  I have not seen the movie yet so I cannot say I like it or not.  But the reviews are not so good.  And this line was from one of the few good ones:

The whole movie feels like Roland Emmerich’s sperm and Michael Bay’s sperm fertilized an egg Tony Scott cryogenically froze back in 1986, producing a “baby” with qualities of all of its “birth” fathers. 

This review, from MSNBC of all places, liked it.
