I can't unsee it!

Steve Bannon will be on Sixty Minutes with Charlie Rose tonight. So how will Charlie Rose handle this? Looking back a few months, Scott Pelley was generally fair with Mike Cernovich (in giving him a chance to respond to attacks). Mike Cernovich acknowledged that following the interview, although Cernovich went into that interview eyes wide open. 

Pelley got a demotion at CBS News shortly after that interview. That might have been for Pelley's over the top Trump Derangement Syndrome and resulting poor ratings (that is what happens when you alienate half your audience) prior to the Cernovich interview. Unlike MSNBC, CBS News has a broader demographic audience.

Charlie Rose was horrible in that interview. Mostly belligerent. In trying to attack Bannon, he kept stepping on his answers.  I have a feeling it was heavily edited too. Pelley did a better job with Cernovich. Bannon did a pretty good job.

Save Steve Bannon

I know Steve Bannon is an asshole. People who have worked with him (and generally agree with him philosophically) can and do attest to that. Just because he is an asshole, does not mean he's wrong. Some say he is sinister and will destroy Trump (I generally like Ben Shapiro, but that is OTT). President Trump benefits from having a team of rivals among his advisers. Bannon is right about the dangers of the administrative state and putting American interests first. I am with Halperin with this, Trump is better off with Bannon than without him (Halperin is way smarter, by the way, than Joe Scarborough).

Trump should not lead with Bannon or give him too much authority. Trump's son-in-law's advice  is also important (and I would not give Kushner too much authority either). It is a ying and yang thing. Trump needs to keep Bannon and Kushner from throttling each other, while getting the benefit of their respective advice and counsel. Trump will not always agree with one or the other, but it helps to hear from both.

And the left absolutely loathes Bannon. Trump should keep him around just to drive them nuts. And why not? Do you think the left and media will suddenly like Trump more if he throws them Bannon? Hell no, it will just embolden them to attack Trump more.

The effort by the Times to depict Mr. Bannon as the second coming of Adolph Hitler and David Duke initially struck me as odd. I say that primarily because when my book JFK, Conservative came out, Mr. Bannon had me on his radio show. He was gracious, friendly and supportive. He’d clearly read the book, which has plenty of material about Kennedy and Israel and the Soviet Jews, and which doesn’t exactly leave it a mystery where I am coming from on those issues. I assume he realized I was Jewish from my biography indicating past work for the Forward and the Jerusalem Post. 

In the past few days, additional testimony and information has emerged. Ben Shapiro, a critic of Breitbart‘s who left the site with some acrimony, nevertheless wrote: “I have no evidence that Bannon’s a racist or that he’s an anti-Semite; the Huffington Post’s blaring headline ‘WHITE NATIONALIST IN THE WHITE HOUSE’ is overstated, at the very least.” No mention of that in the New York Times.

Of course as DaTechGuy notes, the real reason of this coordinated attack on Bannon is obvious: Bannon helped Trump win. And Bannon is giving Trump the ability to go around the media.  

For all the media hyperventilating and bombastic rhetoric about Bannon, there is nothing said by the media about proposed DNC Chair Keith Ellison's ties to Antisemites. The partisan hypocrisy of all of this handwringing by the New York Times is pathetic.

It was obvious Team Trump had a problem immediately following the conventions. The Kahn exchange hurt Trump (and the media ignored Clinton's poor treatment of the Benghazi families). Still, there were a series of media blunders/hit jobs (actually a combination of both), one after another, that did not help Trump. 

All Hillary Clinton does is run ads suggesting Trump lacks the temperament to be President of the United States. Of course, the same could be said about Hillary Clinton, but Trump was busy responding to brush fires set by his own rhetoric (and a dishonest biased media).

Some suggest that nothing matters till Labor Day. But Kerry was destroyed in July August by the Swift Boaters and Romney was destroyed in August by Obama's media onslaught of lies (Romney lived too clean cut a life to have any actual scandals).  August does matter.  This August (at least so far) has not been a good month for Trump.  I concurred with John Nolte's advice for Team Trump. Things were looking really bad. But August is not over yet...

In the last few weeks, Trump has given three very solid speeches: Last Night's Law and Order Speech in West Bend, Wisconsin (with Trump doing a solid effort on black outreach), Foreign Policy Speech in Youngstown, Ohio and an Economics Speech in Detroit, Michigan.

We all know that the mainstream media is generally hostile to Trump. It is not just Trump they are crushing, any criticism of Hillary is being squashed.

While I know few other than political junkies like myself will sit through speeches like this, Trump needs to give voters a reason to vote for him (other than Crooked Hillary is an evil witch). Basically I wanted to hear the candidate tell us why Trump Administration is a better option for the country than a Clinton Administration.  David Horowitz liked the Wisconsin one (a lot). I liked them all.

So who was behind those speeches?  Was that Bannon? Manafort? I assume we will find that out eventually.

I did not think that taco bowl tweet so offensive (I still can't figure out why the Marla Maples stuff on Trump's desk).  Actually it is sort of funny.  But the key to making it work is Trump capitalizing on it with Latino voters with a dialog of why Trump would be better for citizen working class Latinos (something I have not seen a lot of). That is why I welcome Trump reaching out to minorities with substantive issues like I heard yesterday.  

The LA Times poll does suggest Trump's support with Latinos is slightly better than Romney's and may be 14% with blacks.  Is that true?  Those would be amazing numbers for Trump, if correct.  Other data I have seen show Trump's support with both Latinos and blacks to be abysmal.  Although polls showing zero percentage support for Trump seems suspect too.  I think Trump, with an economic substantive jobs message, can do better than many think with working class voters of all races.  

  

And Trump may also bringing in Roger Ailes to help him on debate preparation. That is really interesting (given Ailes past experience), if true, although there are reports denying it (including statements from Trump).

American Power had this back in 2014. Probably not a shout out to Corey Lewandowski.

The prosecutor in Florida is not going to go forward with the Lewandowski misdemeanor assault charges. I agree with that decision.

Did politics play a roll with the prosecutor?  There is no way to say it didn't. Would a Hillary supporter bring the charges against a Trump campaign manager to stir the pot and then drop the charges to leave Donald Trump damaged (as opposed to Lewandowski getting acquitted at trial because the case was weak)?  Of course he would.  

I still support the call not to pursue this case. There is plenty of crime to prosecute in Florida, while there is arguably a misdemeanor assault case there, it is a weak one. A civil case for battery or defamation, sure (although that is up to Fields), but this is not the sort of thing that would typically result in criminal charges. Even assuming it was criminal assault, it falls pretty low on the criminal priority list. 

I personally think Lewandowski was probably a bit too rough with a female reporter who was arguably a bit too pushy with the candidate (of course I was not there). Stuff like that happens on the campaign. She reported it. Lewandowski denied it. Pro Tip to Campaigns: De-Escalate Things Like This. You deal with this with an apology and move on. If Michelle Fields pushed it after that (assuming Lewandowski did the smart thing and just said he was unaware of it and he was sorry), then shame on her.  

Lewandowski's crime, if you will, was escalating this story by calling Fields a liar. Let's just assume this was a misunderstanding between Lewandowski and Fields at that point, what is she supposed to do after being called a liar? There ended up being video showing there was an interaction. It was not completely fabricated.

From that idiotic move by Lewandowski, you have infighting at Breitbart (a Trump media ally), Ben Shapiro and Michelle Fields resigning--which just emphasizes the division among conservatives over Trump. and Lewandowki charged with a misdemeanor (because Trump's campaign said if what she was saying is true she should file criminal charges). Not all domination of the news cycle is helpful to the candidate. Just stepping back and trying to objectively find out this helped Donald Trump, I do not see it.

Regardless of what you think of Trump as a candidate, Lewandowski as a campaign manager is supposed to be looking out and helping Trump. This did not help (and the initial grab--whether it was overtly rough or not is not the thing I am criticizing Lewandowski for, it is how he handled it afterwards). So the primary fail goes to Lewandowski (protecting the candidate means foreseeing how events will play out). Which is why Lewandowski's role in the campaign is being de-emphasized (Oceania has always been against the Lewandowski Assault). Politico is reporting Lewandowski has been neutered in the Trump campaign.

Michelle Fields is not particularly helped by this either. I do not think this was grandstanding, I think this is events spinning out of control. People say she has a pattern of this. The NYPD thing looked real enough to me. Female reporters do get abused when reporting the news. Rough and tumble (to a point) is part of the job, but reporting on events is also part of the job.  She says she is pursuing a defamation civil case, but that will take a while. I would suggest she let it go, but that is her call.

I am not suggesting anyone should compromise their personal beliefs in this regard, but a blanket prohibition on abortion is not remotely politically possible in the foreseeable future. George W. Bush gave a good answer on this years ago, that is a goal that will require a change of many people's hearts. The short term goals should be reducing the rate of abortion until enough people are politically persuaded this practice should stop.
