Is the USA overextending itself militarily?
To be prepared for the future, we need to replace stockpiles with new artillery and new weapon systems (not for Ukraine, but for us). Artillery production needs to be shifted to next generation artillery for our own defense.
A navel war in the Pacific, still requires having an operational navy. 40% of the submarine fleet being down is a bit disturbing. A weakened China is still a dangerous China.
I am not mongering for some new war in Europe or Asia (I would also like to see the Ukraine-Russian war end). I know the way to avoid war is to be fully prepared for war (and the other sides knowing that). The way to avoid a conflict say...over Taiwan...is to be prepared for a war so the Chinese think twice about it.

Wargaming A China Invasion of Taiwan 😬
Most cases Taiwan prevail (but not always) and the cost on both sides is huge
There are a lot of "ifs." Biggest one is whether the USA and Japan help defend Taiwan. Xi has said two things recently: China is reserving the use of force to take Taiwan and that this issue will not go to another generation. We need to take that threat seriously.
As far as US interests over Taiwan--a hostile China taking over Taiwan would be a seismic shift in the region. Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines would all be at risk. I doubt a China willing to risk the losses needed to take Taiwan would be very benevolent in that new strategic position if it prevailed.
The best way to win is not fight in the first place. Russia's lack of success in Ukraine must give China pause (invading Ukraine is arguably easier than an amphibious invasion of Taiwan). China may figure to wait for US power to further decline before acting.
Taiwan needs to be in a position where China is not willing to risk it. Taiwan needs to up its own defense to make China realize the cost of invasion is just not worth it (win or lose). The long term goal should be China morphing from less than a Xi autocracy/dictatorship and into a modern state like South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. At that point, Taiwan and China joining might be welcomed by both sides. That could happen--but I doubt anytime soon (barring an economic collapse of China).

It is the right decision. China can STFU. I recognize what JJ Sefton is saying, but once this became an issue you cannot back down. Of course Biden and Pelosi are weak (and our military is too woke right now). The Chinese are not exactly doing so great themselves and Xi is weaker than many might guess. We might see China's government collapse and Taiwan live long enough to take over politically (ideologically).

Vintage Hong Kong
Hong Kong politicians are kow towing to Beijing over extradition issues to mainland. I support the protesters on this. But sadly, 'one country, two systems' is quickly going the way of one system, which is whatever Beijing says. Which explains why so many Hong Kong people are heading to Canada. Taiwan, you may be next.
China is of course standing off with Trump over tariffs. Vietnam reported China is trying to get around that.
China is playing the long game and intends to win. China is going for the South China Sea, disputed islands with Japan, and Taiwan. It would not surprise me if China has plans to eventually go for the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore too.

The World Ignores Chinese Muslim Reeducation Camps
The Gulag Archipelago is very active in western China
While Israel defending itself is scorned, China detaining over a million Muslims (mostly Uighur) gets barely a mention by the world. Pakistan and other Muslim nations near China ignore the issue, mainly due to the Chinese buying their silence through trade deals.
China is a bully. The best way to deal with a bully is to push back--both on economic issues and human rights. China's treatment of Muslims also needs exposure because it demonstrates just how hypocritical criticism of the USA and Israel is on this topic. You don't hear Ilhan Omar, Linda Sarsour, or Rashida Tlaib or most leftists raising the alarm on China (and they should be called out on it).
If we don't push back to China on trade and human rights, what's next? Escalation in the South China Sea? Taiwan, Philippine, and Japan hostility?
