Melania Trump donates some classic Dr. Seuss books for National Read A Book Day and Liz Phipps Soeiro can't help but rise to the occasion. Of course it has to throw some digs in against Betsy DeVos (even though she promotes kids having the choice to be able to avoid failing schools).  

So Dr. Seuss was a racist? That's what Liz claims:

Another fact that many people are unaware of is that Dr. Seuss’s illustrations are steeped in racist propaganda, caricatures, and harmful stereotypes. Open one of his books (If I Ran a Zoo or And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, for example), and you’ll see the racist mockery in his art. Grace Hwang Lynch’s School Library Journal article, “Is the Cat in the Hat Racist? Read Across America Shifts Away from Dr. Seuss and Toward Diverse Books,” reports on Katie Ishizuka’s work analyzing the minstrel characteristics and trope nature of Seuss’s characters. Scholar Philip Nel’s new book, Was the Cat in the Hat Black? The Hidden Racism of Children’s Literature, and the Need for Diverse Books, further explores and shines a spotlight on the systemic racism and oppression in education and literature.

Beyond the schadenfreude of the lefties going nuts over Rush doing children's books, I am glad about this.  I am tired of American history being portrayed in the most negative light possible. The truth is the people on the Mayflower were exceptional persons.  Congratulations to Rush Limbaugh.

Chuck Jones' version of Dr. Seuss' the Lorax

New but not necessarily improved Lorax

I watched the new version of The Lorax.   I am a big Dr. Seuss fan and I liked the original children's book The Lorax and the Chuck Jones' embedded animated version depicted above.  But the most recent movie 3-D version, while it had some moments, was not as good.  Any surprise?  It will probably entertain your kids for a sitting or two, but it will not be a classic you will watch again and again.  This current movie bordered at times on Al Gore sanctimonious.  There is an anti capitalist message in the story (which I disagree with), but there is a pro life message in Horton Hears a Who, and a pro parenting message in Horton Hatches An Egg, and a anti materialistic and focus on the meaning of Christmas message in The Grinch who Stole Christmas.  While I don't agree with every opinion Theodor Seuss Geisel may have had, I believe Dr. Seuss was a genius.  So I am not going to be too harsh on the new version of The Lorax.  Kids will probably like it even if it is a bit preachy, drawn out, heavy handed, hypocritical, and over the top.  There is also difference between conservation vs. environmentalism.  You can use the movie as a starting point to discuss that with the kids.   Danny DeVito as the voice of the Lorax and Taylor Swift and Zac Efron as other characters do fine as voices in the film.  The animation well done.
