Did Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez bogart tips as a bartender?

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the darling of the Democrats right now (even if most of them gave her no chance of winning) but bogarting tips is skeevy behavior.  So if Ocasio-Cortez wins, she will fit right in at Congress!

Donnie Wahlberg leaving big tips for late crew at Waffle House and Patriots Day Movie Review

In related Wahlberg family news, I watched Patriots Day on DVD last night. Peter Berg (who directed and wrote it) and Mark Wahlberg (who acted and produced it) did an excellent job with that film. For a film following a historic terrorist event, I thought it was nuanced, suspenseful, and generally well done.

Rotten Tomatoes: Patriots Day

History vs. Hollywood:  Biggest deviation from fact is Mark Wahlberg's character, who is fictional composite character used tie the story line together.  There are interesting facts on how such an investigation is done which was really interesting.

Game Changing NLRB Ruling: Are we obligated to tip robot restaurant workers?

With this NLRB ruling (via Hot Air), the future may be coming sooner than you think!

This is definitely a game changer if it sticks.
A trend toward automation
Meanwhile, technology companies are finding a receptive audience among quick service and fast casual restaurants looking to limit their exposure to labor market risk. With Seattle leading the pack in passing a local $15 minimum wage, and pressure mounting for a minimum wage increase in Congress and in state legislatures nationwide, more and more food service companies are looking to automate more of their processes—taking them out of the hands of employees and putting them in the hands of robots. Research from Oxford University projects that there is a 92% probability that most fast food preparation and delivery will be automated over the next few decades.
Momentum Machines, for example, has developed and is marketing a robot that makes burgers, right down to pickle slicing. Their machine will produce 360 hamburgers an hour.

You can always tell someone's real character by how they treat wait staff: Hillary Clinton Stiffs On Tip

Hillary is wearing "pink" for a reason (maybe we should call her Ms.Pink from now on):

Instapundit: Hillary is as inevitable as she was in 2008, a woman with a net worth of 333 million dollars gripes about equal pay (and then doesn't even tip), Hillary claims she wants a constitutional amendment on campaign finance reform (even though she abuses the campaign finance system more than anyone), Hillary dodges questions on private server two years ago, above average order at Chipotle? (her tip was not above average), Hillary is a serial liar, and question for Hillary: do underage sex slaves on Jeffrey Epstein's private island feel empowered by your candidacy?

Here's a Tip for Hillary Clinton: If you stiff the waitress, you'll pay

EBL Hillary thinks she is above the law

Will Hillary undo herself (again)?

Instapundit: Hillary invents immigrant parents, spontaneous campaign events are a bit staged, do Hillary's Lesbian lovers love Chipotle, and hope for Hillary!

This Britt McHenry Tow Truck meltdown is a character tell, just like Hillary's arrogant behavior of not tipping, parking in handicap spots, etc.
TOM: @BrittMcHenry destroys her career
Instapundit: The way to get back is to sue them (in Hillary's case to call her out)

Smitty: Friday Fiction Challenge: Grandma is Hillary and she throws Grandaughter under the bus to save her own career (fiction can be very close to the truth sometimes)

Tipping in America

Dan Drezner described this dissertation on cross country tipping as one of the most interesting political science papers he has read in years.

Which reminded me of this:

"Cough up a buck you cheap bastard!"

TIPS: To ensure prompt service (are service staff better off under the American or European system)

As Hot Air notes, Seattle is probably going to implement a $15 minimum wage.  Service staff (waitresses, waiters, bartenders) are starting to balk.  They are worried restaurants may implement a European style service charge (which are "less generous" and typically 10%) or management will force waiters to share more of their tips with back of the house employees.

Kshama Sawant, a socialist elected to the Seattle city council on her own $15 pledge, calls those suggestions “fear mongering” and says people who cling to tips miss the point. “We don’t want any worker to be beholden to the mood of the customer on any given day,” she says.

So I guess my advice about taking up traditional barista jobs is not as good as it was.  Especially since Howard Schultz the CEO of Starbucks said his company might start cutting benefits of Baristas if the minimum wage hike goes through.  But if you scroll though this Rule 5 gallery, there are bikini barista jobs that might turn out to be lucrative!

But this raises the question: are tips better for service than flat gratuities?  Is it better to have a flat 18% than a tip (truth is most don't tip less than 20% anyway at restaurants).  I guess we will find out.

Update:
Tips are a concern, depending on what type of establishment you are working in... Maybe this is to address the income inequality between front of the house workers and back of the house workers.

Mark Zuckerberg: People who don't tip well suck..and other people remember it.

Mark, take my advice:  Tip.  Tip 20% if the service is good.  I know, it is Italy and you do not have to tip because the 10% service charge is built into the bill (typically).  But that is more Northern Europe and regardless you should tip anyway.

I get you are frugal.  That is commendable and totally fine.  Your bill was 32 euros.  So a generous tip would have been 7 euros?  Best PR you can buy is just being moderately nice.  There is a difference between frugality (which is a virtue) and being cheap (which is a character flaw).  Unless you want to confirm for the world you really are the asshole from the movie.  And from the IPO.

You are no Steve Buscemi either Mark...
