Venezuela is not a "colony" of the U.S. Sure the U.S. is directing things there now in a macro sense, but there will eventually be elections in Venezuela to establish new leadership, presumably the opposition who won the last election by 70% (which Maduro ignored). 

As for leaving parts of Maduro-Chavez's government in place, in the short term that made sense to avoid chaos. Remember Iraq when Team Bush took out the whole Saddam Government after his overthrow. How did that work out?

Think it can't happen here?  I am just surprised I heard this on National Public Radio. NYT's Nicholas Casey as a guest on Fresh Air talks about the collapse in Venezuela. Chavez's legacy is manifesting itself now. Venezuela's current problems are due to run away Democratic socialism and popular social programs, till the economy finally collapsed. Venezuela was not poor and was blessed with oil, but in the end it was all unsustainable.

Milton Friedman needs to be taught in grammar schools, high schools and colleges…

Hugo Chavez was wrong, Barack Obama is wrong.

And because Dr. Friedman is not taught enough is a big part of the reason for the higher education bubble…

It is not just journalism, although God knows that the only place more in denial than that is academia, critical thinking means owning and challenging your own biases…

I guess that decision on cancer treatment in Cuba is not looking so good now.    

I was watching Sixty Minutes last Sunday and they had on the IDEO industrial designer and Stanford professor David Kelley.  He had cancer and spoke to Steve Jobs about it.  Jobs, who had his own failure of "alternative medicine" advised him to get the most aggressive and best Western cancer treatment available.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez warned private banks on Sunday that he will consider nationalizing any that refuse to finance agricultural projects promoted by his government.
