Initially claims to have shot her by accident when she surprised him at home...

My initial impression when I first heard about this last night was this was a tragic accident.  Given the high level of violent crime and especially home invasions/burglary in South Africa, I can understand how something like this can happen.

But now police are saying this shooting was intentional...

From the stands, Bela Karolyi demanded that Aly's coach file a protest!

Aly Raisman was in the worse place you can be in the Olympics, fourth place.  But thanks to a quick and effective plea for a protest by Bela Karolyi, which prompted Aly's coach to act, she got Bronze.

NBC Olympic Raaaaacist Fail: You need to screen those commercials better...

If we were not so hyper sensitive about race, we could laugh at the gaff.  This juxtaposition of commentary and commercial was certainly not intentional.  If there is no intent there is no racism.  But it is sure embarrassing for NBC, just a day after the water polo breast appearance.  And given what a jerk Bob Costas was in interviewing Michael Phelps recently, I do not have a lot of sympathy for Costas.

When it comes to Rule 5 and creative blog whoring promotion, Robert Stacy McCain wrote the book!

Still, I do recommend field hockey.  But kudos for Bob Belvedere recognizing water polo needed special attention.  Kudos to Stacy McCain for recognizing the genius of Bob's post.  Stacy is of course correct to condemn gymnastics coverage as frankly creepy.  Stacy's silence on field hockey, however, remains unexplained and must be to some sort of bias...maybe nationalism because my examples (here and here) were not Team USA?  Dan Collins is not so provincial.

Update:  Fox News is calling it a "nip slip."  Which would be raaaaacist if Team Japan was involved, but it was not.

When Team USA wins, the IRS says:  Ka-ching!  

Yes, the U.S. taxes Olympic medals.   Olympic medal winners also get a cash award that is also taxed.  Marco Rubio is moving to end that.

The United States is one of the few countries that taxes its citizens for money they earn overseas.

Olympics Rule 5: Suddenly everyone is a field hockey fan!

Given the success of the first London 2012 Olympic week Rule 5 submissions for today's Rule 5 Monday, the blogosphere cries out for more:

Shame on the IOC

The International Olympic Committee are hypocrites and the games are a sham in pandering to the prejudices and hatreds of certain groups...

If the IOC cannot acknowledge murdering Israeli athletes as being wrong, what really is the point?

And as Instapundit has noted it is not like they are even trying to move forward.  The International Olympic Committee continues to pander to the prejudices and hatreds of others, wishing the Israelis would just go away:

Still today the IOC stubbornly insists on the games’ apolitical nature, despite all evidence to the contrary. This is the reason it has refused to observe a minute of silence for the victims of the 1972 Munich massacre, despite the intense lobbying of President Obama, the German Bundestag, the Canadian national legislature, the Knesset and just about every Jewish congregation in the world. But the IOC doesn’t want to taint the games with the quotidian ugliness of politics. It would spoil the fun—and remind everyone of just how political the games are. (For some reason though it didn’t object to a tattered US flag from the World Trade Center appearing in the opening ceremony at the 2002 Salt Lake City winter games. Could it have anything to do with the nationality of the victims?)

What really is the point of these games if they cannot condemn or even recognize evil anymore?  If the Muslim countries boycotted over a moment of silence, well the IOC response should be "don't let the door hit you on the way out." That would be their decision, not the policy of the IOC.

Update:  Why the IOC won't mention the 1972 Olympics...  A must see film on how poor the response was at Munich.
