Atomic Heritage Foundation: Debate over the Japanese Surrender. There is some debate over whether or not Japan would have surrendered without atomic weapons being used. My belief is there would have been a lot more deaths if a conventional invasion took place and there would not have been immediate surrender. The evidence for that is overwhelming, especially given Japanese history and the country's beliefs about invasion and defense of the home islands. Eventually a surrender would have happened, but it would have been months of more Okinawas to get there. Marine lives come first.
Even with the bombs, the Kyūjō incident (宮城事件 Kyūjō Jiken) also happened where a fraction of the Japanese military tried to have a coup d'état to kidnap the Emperor and fight on. You can debate wether or not Nagasaki was necessary, but that is hindsight thinking at best. Emperor Hirohito referred to the atomic bombings in his surrender speech, saying, “The enemy has begun to employ a new and most cruel bomb, the power of which to do damage is, indeed, incalculable, taking a toll of many innocent lives.”
