Favorite Band by State: Jack Johnson, Wisconsin

A Map of Every State's Favorite Band
I was going to say Virginia is pretty boring with DMB, but Massachusetts is Neil Young?  Delaware is Rush?  And Vermont and New Hampshire are Phish and the Greatful Dead, respectively?

Update: Smitty says Virginia's over riding shame is picking Dave Matthews Band! The shame is being completely boring middle aged vanilla hipster.

  1. Rick Ross! Woo hoo, Florida showing its love of men wearing fur coats in summer in Miami, and proudly showing their sweaty man boobs!

If they wanted hip-hop, they could have also chosen Luther Campbell & the 2 Live Crew.

Of course, the state could also be know for any of a number of Southern rock bands (I mean, if they're going to use Neil Young then they're obviously not worried about the act being well past its sell-by date): Molly Hatchett, the Outlaws, .38 Special and of course Lynyrd Skynyrd. Or Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, though they bugged out for LA at the earliest possible moment.

Or Marilyn Manson! Which also brings to mind Gen & the Genitorturers, but they're probably too obscure. (Features of their stage act: Inviting members of the audience up on stage to get their genitals pierced or have their mouths sown shut.)

Or they could pick bands that wholly or partly have based themselves in Florida. Of which the two biggest are probably AC/DC (I know Brian Johnson has lived in south Florida for a long time now, can't remember if anyone else does) or the BeeGees.

Or if you are a true metal head, at least one of Iron Maiden's members lives in Florida. (I think it's Nicko McBrain, as he is a fanatical golfer.)

But I'm cool with Rick Ross, for the reasons given above. Hey, it (probably) beats being know for serial killers....

    1. And I always forget that the Allman Brothers Band was formed in Jacksonville. I just associate them so much with Macon. But formed in Florida they were, and Dickey Betts and Butch Trucks were both Florida boys. That was one helluva good band....

  2. When did he stop boxing?

Besides, I thought Dylan was the Badger State's fave.

  4. Now to actually look at what was done and how: Okay, that's strange.

I can get New Hampshire and Vermont, actually. Lots of stoners move to those states, and the locals are too busy farming to listen to much music. (Oddly enough, I know a dairy farmer in Vermont.)

I also get Virginia favoring DMB. (Huh huh, dumb.) The suburbs around DC have been a huge growth area, and every dork hipster-douchebag commie kid who wants to work for the government is going to move there, and the DMB is the band of dork hipster douchebags.

I totally don't get Maine and REM. That's more mystifying to me than Rush and Delaware.

And I don't know most of the non-old non-country acts. (For that matter, I'm not sure I recognize all the country acts, as that isn't my thing.)

But still, Rock Ross & Florida! Yeah, baby!

  5. And New Mexico is into Linkin Park? What's with that?

  6. Hey, I can explain Rush and Delaware! Rush (or rather, their drummer and lyricist) was all into Ayn Rand back in the day. And Delaware, being the home of all those corporations, is very into Ayn Rand's pro-business outlook. All is explained!

  7. Who's Miguel (he asks rhetorically)?
