The opposition was poorly handled, but people definitely raised a hand to help. What would have them do, riot? The state opposed any opposition and let this go forward. The federal courts did not ultimately intervene, holding the decision was in the discretion of the state trial court.
I am all for people having the freedom to make their own decisions. Given in most states you can't transfer a piece of real property without a writing, it seem odd to allow the decision to starve someone to death to rest on hearsay from an spouse who has moved on into a new relationship and trumping the wishes of her own parents.
Santorum made a fool of himself on this - clearly it was a state, not Federal, issue, but the lady was murdered and no one raised a hand to help.
