Nelson Mandela RIP

RIP
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the father of the the unified South African nation, died on December 5 2013 at the age of 95.

For shepherding in a peaceful end of Apartheid in South Africa, Nelson Mandela deserves kudos. The transition could have been far worse in South Africa and Mr. Mandella was critical in preventing that occurring. However, I did both agree and disagree with him on economic and political issues. Overall, he was by far the best president South Africa could have had at that critical transition period.

  1. Those are the most lame-ass clenched fists I've ever seen. They're like Dick Shawn's "Sieg heil, baby" in The Producers.

  2. An unrepentant communist terrorist.

And he supprted all his buds in terror to the very end.

No offense, but you can have him.

  3. I know a white S. African libertarian who's stunned by the prevalence of comments like yours, edutcher, on various conservative websites.

You really have no idea what you're talking about. Mandela's economic policy in office was quite pro-business.

And if he had been pro-terrorist, there would've been a white bloodbath.

    1. There was a lot of corruption in the new government, but not directly involving Mandela. He did manage better economic growth than before the change (granted that was partly due to sanctions ending).

But he absolutely forestalled a blood bath (and it would have quickly escalated into a civil war since whites were ready for the worst). Mandela prevented that.

    1. Here is from the Corner editors... Of course, they also supported Mitt Romney.

Ironic W gave Mandela that award (which Mandela accepted) and then Mandela almost immediately accused the USA as a terrorist oppressive government. So go figure that.

    2. Mandela didn't want a white bloodbath. He knew where the money was.

    3. The situation in SA is more complicated than just White vs. Black. Its not MLK vs. Bull Connor in Africa. Black SA is divided by tribes. So is white SA, and then you got the Asians.

  7. Debbie Schlussel--whoever the hell she is--says:

When Mandela and his Communist ANC took over South Africa, Jews left the country in droves. That’s because Mandela fostered an atmosphere of non-stop anti-Semitism/Jew-hatred ...

An actual South African Jew says:

To South African Jews, and to people throughout the world, [Mandela] has a value we will never be able to quantify. He represents the very best of human kindness, one that always tried to build a better South Africa for all South Africans. ... South Africa’s Jewish community, in particular, will be forever grateful for the influence Mandela had on their lives not just as President, but also for the respect he showed for every religion.

I have no idea why some on the right hate Mandela, to the point that they are blinded to the actions he actually took as president, but they sure make it easy for liberals to play the race card.

    1. Debbie Schlussel is sort of a female version of Alex Jones.

You are exactly right Chip. There are legitimate reasons to point out Mandela was no saint. I understand that. He was a man with flaws (big ones). The ANC is definitely not my ideal form of government.

But the man was great as the first president of a post Apartheid South Africa (and that role was bigger than he was as an individual). And he deserves credit for that. And to voluntarily step down after just one term, leaving a republic in place (how ever flawed) was a great precedent for South African and the entire developing world.

And while I find the coverage from the Left completely OTT about what a saint Mandela was, aome on the right are playing right into the left's hands by going OTT about Mandela the other way (without acknowledging what good he did). It is stupid.

    4. By your standards Barack Obama is the savior of the middle class and a huge admirer of private enterprise, b/c there's a ton of quotes from him saying both.

With about 2 minutes of googling you can turn up some lunatic's site--maybe Debbie Schlussel herself--accusing Lincoln of being a marxist based on something he wrote or said.

And if the internet had been around in 1775, there'd have been no lack of Tory blogs calling George Washington a terrorist.

Nelson Mandela was the head of an organization fighting against an oppressive government. People in such positions use a lot of fiery rhetoric. (Ever heard "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants"?) They're not picky about where they get their support. Should Washington, Franklin, and Jefferson be called monarchists b/c they accepted support for their revolution from Louis XVI?

What matters about a man is what he does, not what he says. To focus on words and ignore actions is to emulate the thought process of an Obamabot.
