Very glad to see the boatlift celebrated. On 11 Sep 2001 I was in my office in the McNamara Bldg in Detroit when the the first images played across the television sets some employees had for news monitoring. By 9:15 AM, after seeing the first impact on CNN tape delay, then a live image of the second impact, we knew, without a doubt, what was happening. By 10:00 AM we were hearing emergency message traffic from both the Pentagon and our NY Harbor Operations office in Caven Point, New Jersey. By 10:30 AM I sent all of my subordinates home for the day, and by 1:00 PM the Federal Building was closed except for FPS, USSS, FBI, and other law enforcement agencies from nearby. There were more sub-machine guns in evidence than I knew we had in the building. We did not know what was next and we were on a direct unobstructed path from Detroit Metro Airport. I saw raw fear in the eyes of many people that day.
In the Caven Point office and boat basin there was a meeting going on at the time, and once the reality sunk in, everyone one of our boats were en route to the the Battery Park area of lower Manhattan, crewed by everyone who was at the meeting, some in suits, some in overalls. It went on all day.
Beyond the boat lift was the USAR teams called out, and that lasted well over a month.
On 21 Sep 2001, and FPS officer, a neighbor and friend of mine, was gunned down and killed in the lobby of the Federal Building during the work day.
It seemed the mother fucking tragedy just would not end.
