San Fermin Festival in Pamplona, Spain

It is an event to be sure.  I always root for the bulls and cows in this festival...

Ouch

  1. This idea of running with young Miura bulls is flat out insane. Riding a cutting horse against Herefords, Angus, and sundry others [including one mean Holstein bull] is one thing, but even on horse back I'd never face off with Spanish Miura bulls, or Texas Longhorns, for that matter.

    1. Hemmingway also conversed on the horse subject in "Death in the Afternoon" ... few non-Spanish spectators know that the horses used in the bull ring likely have never worked in such conditions previously. The Picadors are generally highly skilled horsemen who guide their mounts in the classic high school way...with legs and seat, reins are mostly for cuing. Old west Comanches also rode this way just with less finesse. Anyone as old as me learned to ride on a long lead on a saddle without reins or stirrups until you could "sit" quietly and confidently that way, at all gaits, then stirrups and reins were added. Here is Stacy Westfall in a breathtaking "natural" ride at the 2006 Quarter Horse Congress. I only dream of riding so well...I've ridden bareback without bridle but never with her level of skill and grace.

  2. There are those who say macho is merely the Spanish translation for stupid.

  3. I need to qualify my comment(s) by stating I abhor the sport of bullfighting and especially the risks for the Picador horses...no matter how skilled their riders are...it is a shitty sport and shitty job, right up there with bear-bating. And trust me I have no cuddly love for bears or Miura bulls...it is the principle of the whole thing. I think the bulls should be allowed two outriders with AK-47's and then let's see how much finesse the others have facing them. Which is crazy in the first place...yes, it requires mega-courage, but if you get gored in the crotch or femoral artery, you f'ing deserve it. A Picador's horse doesn't.

    1. I would have no problem with the matador facing the bull with a sword (hell I would give him an assortment of hand weapons) and took on the bull. The whole thing of using picadors and wearing the animal out to finally finish him off is unsupporting. I would feel slightly better about if the fight was reasonably fair and the bull gets to live if he wins.

  4. I worked on a cattle ranch for a while - a bull picked up one of my coworkers and flipped him 10 feet - even without pointy horns a bull's neck muscles can inflict some damage.

No thanks on running with the bulls.

    1. Elsewhere I mentioned riding working cow horses and cutting horses. Worst luck I ever had was to be on a fresh off the track quarter horse racer when a Holstein bull (huge MF'r)decided to charge my companion an I...my cutting horse was carrying a youngster (13 yo) I was teaching to ride and I was aboard the sweet but moronic race horse....still a "plow reiner." The cutter stood fast, dodging slightly as necessary, and turned the bull, even reaching out to bite the bulls face, with the young man aboard, and I mostly did flat spins holding the newbie in place. In short, I was useless, but the working cow horse I adored was perfection and took care of his young charge.
