The creators of the show are surprised by Nolte's embrace (they shouldn't be because it is true)! Nolte's take is correct, even though I am sure that was not the writers' and producers' intent. Steve Martin's My Blue Heaven did this Mafia in the witness protection program first, but I do like Lilyhammer a lot and Steve Van Zandt is really good in it.
