Disappointing. While Quvenzhane Wallis is an upcoming child actor to watch and the movie had some great visual images at points, I found the pacing slow and plodding. The film's romanticization of child abuse/neglect, alcoholism, and the mythical freedom of living in poverty in the Louisiana bayou was pretentious and condescending. But it was, not surprisingly, a bit hit at Cannes.
