Before that controversy, Columbus' contribution was controversial over him being Catholic and from a Southern European background (even though John Cabot who sailed for England was really named Giovanni Caboto and was Catholic too). Columbus Day only became a federal holiday in 1937 when FDR was trying to get the Italian American vote. But Tony Soprano's words of wisdom here are pretty darn good.
