A curious re-election strategy in a state that is 93% Caucasian.
I like American Indian history (although I think what Governor Schweitzer has in mind are courses on White European guilt). I am very concerned with the chronic alcoholism, methamphetamine, and crime in Native American communities (and Montana has several large reservations). The war on drugs is not working there (like it is not working anywhere). No doubt there is still prejudice against Native Americans, although I do not think that even begins to explain why those communities are suffering the way they are. A lot of it has to do with a system that kept Indians in poverty for decades, fostered dependence, and failed to reward achievement (and in fact rewarded bad behavior). Indian tribes suffered under patronizing government officials interfering with and mirco-managing Indian affairs. And the best thing to happen to tribal people is having self autonomy and accountability.

Pablo in comments points out he is up on term limits, so Schwitzer is not running for re-election. Now imagine Barack Obama freed from having to worry about re-election...scary!
Is Governor Schweitzer "Montana Cowgirl"?
Montana's Gov. Schweitzer enjoying some Midnight Cowboy action in NYC! |

He's not up for reelection due to term limits. So he's free to say what he thinks now.
ReplyDeleteOkay, that explains it. He is trying to get in with the Democrats and probably out of Montana. And maybe score some invites to those "hot" parties they throw on either coast.
