Claire Synder Phillips was a American women, code name "High Pockets", who worked as a spy in Manila during the Japanese occupation. She was married to Sgt. John Phillips, who was captured and died in a Japanese POW camp.
Claire Phillips pretended to be an Italian-Pilipino woman and ran the Tsubaki Club in Manila, catering to Japanese officers and businessmen. She would ply them with alcohol, flatter them in-between sets of her cabaret act, and then send what she learned on to resistance contacts. She also used the profits generated by the Tsubaki Club to get medicine and supplies in to the American POWs.
The Japanese secret police eventually suspected her of spying. She was tortured and held in solitary confinement, but was eventually saved when Manila was liberated.
She died in 1960 from complications of alcoholism and meningitis. A lot of people who experienced the horrors of occupation suffered from PTSD.
