Midsommar: A Review

The movie is about some outside visitors to a folk festival that takes place in a small Swedish town once every 90 years. It's touted as some sort of classic folk horror movie. If you liked the remake of The Wicker Man, with a touch of Rosemary's BabyBrigadoon, and relationship break up movies thrown into the mix, then maybe this film is for you.

The photography was interesting as was some of the stylization (it had a unique folk look to it). The plot was totally predictable (although one of the scenes was unintentionally hilarious). Pretentious film school students might like it, since there are lots of hamfisted references to other greater films.

I really like a well done horror movie. I thought Ari Aster's Hereditary was an ok horror film. This is not anywhere near as good. While weird and creepy at times, there was almost zero tension and I didn't care for most of the characters. Perhaps this is a film to watch while taking acid or mushrooms. Then again, maybe not.

Florence Pugh gave a good performance, with what she had to work with. I thought she was excellent in Outlaw King and was the only good thing in Lady Macbeth.

Rotten Tomatoes: Midsommar

The Guardian though it an enjoyable film, which I could see if you looked at it purely as a dark comedy.

There are some social satire points about the social health system in Sweden to be made (and controlling cost through Ättestupa). Maybe an Abba soundtrack or a Men Without Hats cameo could have improved it too
