Instapundit: Sad News: Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols 85, diagnosed with dementia

I know this is not a good diagnosis, but I wish her the best.

  1. There are many kinds of dementia and most of us will have some kind. The little blurb I saw said nothing about Alzheimer's, which is fatal.

She may require some custodial care, but, for someone her age, that's not necessarily all that unique.

    1. You are right, there are many types of dementia. But I am pretty sure this is not just a "senior moment" if she is announcing it. Most dementia involved significant declines in mental ability, with roughly corresponding declines in overall health. But even with Alzheimer's, it tends to be a long process, years. The later you are diagnosed in life, the shorter the lifespan but that is mostly just because you are older. It is sad because no one wants to decline and when you get older, your memories are what make you, you.

The trick is to make the time you have left as enjoyable and pleasant as you can. Dementia can also lead to confusion, anger and a host of other behavior problems.
