Jonah Goldberg lays out why he is not voting for Donald Trump

Drink Responsibly (and don't go for the heroin)

Jonah Goldberg lays out a well reasoned (and well written) case of why he is not voting for Donald Trump. Some of you will definitely disagree, but this is one of those, read the whole thing articles.

I have friends who are very pro Trump and other friends who are not.  For the most part those groups, while not in agreement, are still my friends (although some of them might write me off). Trump has tapped into something that has been ignored for a long time by politicians (and we are wise to pay attention to that dynamic). We will see where this leads.  I wish for the best.

I am never supporting Hillary Clinton. That I can say definitely. She is a known contemptible force of destruction.  Her administration would be a train wreck for this country.  Bernie Sanders, Marx bless him, would be arguably worse (I say arguably only because a Sanders Administration might show a uneducated generation of Millennials just how bad socialism is in practice).

I am pretty sure I am not voting for Donald Trump. I hesitate to say never only because I am not sure what will happen between now and November 2016.

If the country is heading for the same cliff  (albeit under different siren calls)--isn't the best course of action to stop running? I need to know the direction we are heading is the right one.

I don't hate Trump. On some issues Trump will be better than Hillary. I do not deny he's entertaining. I don't believe he is an inherently evil man (as the left will portray him). Trump probably means well, but Trump is an unprincipled man with a track record all over the place. Which makes him unpredictable as a politician. I can't endorse that. If he manages to win over Hillary this fall, I hope he proves me wrong and turns out to be a good leader for this country.

I absolutely agree with this (I even did a photoshop as Trump at the Sands back when Nevada was contested).

  1. At another place, with Cruz still in but definitely past his peak, I made a comment that it wasn't Trump himself that bothered me. I liked the guy well enough, and I do not think he would be a disaster for the country. What bothered me was his supporters. I'm glad to see that for the most part, that seems to be what bothers Jonah as well. Like him, I'm fine with those that see him as a necessary evil and the better of two evils. The people I can't stand are the Alt-Righters (there seem to be far more than I thought) and to some respect the False Priest. The False Priest is a bit tougher, because some of them I think are really Fake Moderates, and the two have cross over in a Venn Diagram, although I doubt Hillary would understand.

However, there is one aspect of Jonah's decision that does bother me. I know another person, who recently moved to California (and that was a good move for his particular career). They have come out saying they won't vote for Trump either. But it is an easy call, and like Jonah, sort of admit it up front. If California is in play for the Electoral College, then Hillary or any other Dem is toast. It is not. So a Republican not going to the polls in California is not just Resigned to vote for better of two evils, but Resigned to not worry about it at all. For them, I'm not sure if they are standing on Principle or that their not really being tested on what their Principles are.

For me, Texas is most likely not in play for Hillary, but it's only 2 governors away from being a Democrat stronghold. I know Hillary and Bernie will finish the job Obama has well started for them. I'll vote for the R. I already cast my ballot in the Primary and lost. At least this year, I had a real choice in the Primary. An improvement was made this cycle. I'll take what I can get.

    1. I have no problem with people doing what they deem best. I am not criticizing anyone for voting for Trump in the general. It is a rational choice given the selection. I am opting not to support either, although I admit I would rather see Trump prevail over Hillary.

  2. If the alt-right freaks you out Leland then you are in for some heavy sledding. They are the future of the Republican party in it's populist incarnation. This was their breakthrough election. They will decimate the feeble cuckservatives who play pretend conservatives on cable News. FOX has been exposed and soon enough a new venue will be developed.

You saw the cucks in action with the recent Facebook debacle. These morons are ineffective weeines. Pajama boys in footie pajamas with Ronald Reagans picture on them.

    1. If my lukewarm reception of your preferred candidate upsets you; then consider the feeling mutual. Perhaps you understand me all to well. If I misunderstand you, that's very likely. What I do understand is that I mentioned nothing about Fox News, as I haven't watched it as a network since E.D. Hill left Fox and Friends. I was that impressed with her, but her absence did result in a noticeable shift left. Generally, I don't watch any news program. My personal opinion is that routine watching of the lead that bleeds causes people to be overly anxious and nervous.

    2. Ack... was not impressed with E.D. Hill. Anyway, I think what started me switching off Fox News was when Tony Snow left Fox News Sunday. He was able to keep the token libs in check. He left, and the token libs started to run the show. Brit Hume did a fair job, but after he lost his son, the fight left him too.

  3. It is fine if you can not get on board with Trump. I don't write anybody off because of that. I don't drop them as a friend. They are usually the ones who project their feelings onto me. I don't think you should worship Trump. You should enjoy him. Enjoy how he is trolling Hillary and the press and the cuckservatives. If he does 20% of the things he says he is going to do he will be the most conservative President since Reagan. I mean who is his competition? Bush? Fuggetaboutit!

    1. I completely enjoy Trump trolling Hillary. By far best part of this campaign so far.

Actually, I blame Bush for the mess we are in. Bush gave us Obama. That never would have happened if Bush did what was right and stopped listening to Cheney and Rove.

    2. As much as I like Bush the man; my father, who actually flew with Bush in the 147th, told me long ago that Bush was always a political animal. To me, that means he always seeked the middle ground to get votes. Rove and Cheney are just that much more political. Wanting Bush to do what was right would have required him to quit being a politician. I think he did that for a few days around 9/11. But that's about it. What gave us Obama is a combination of Bush and the GOP Congress, that is likely to give us Hillary as well. While everyone is upset about Beck and Facebook; McConnell and his ilk are going along with Obama's revamping of HUD. I'd be more impressed if I saw the outrage shown for say Cruz be shown to people like McConnell. I don't recall Trump complaining about McConnell.

  4. Lowery, Williamson, Will, Beck, Perino, Goldberg, Iceberg whatever had been exposed as the lame ass pretend conservatives pajama boys that they really are. Trump is the only chance at change that is possible. Otherwise it will be more of the same crap just a different day.

  6. I use the term cuckservative specifically because of how the pussies feel about it. The idea of people standing up for themselves freaks them out. It they are working class. Specifically if they are white working class. They want us to die and our communities to disappear. They have said as much.

After they take that attitude why they expect anything besides the knife is a mystery to me.

  7. Because I can't find myself and others in Jonah's neatly categorized groups, I still think he's missing something. There is something inchoate about Trump. I don't think anyone has nailed it yet.

I did learn that Jonah has a convenient out for not voting D or R this year: The "what would Buckley do?" excuse.

    1. That is a good point. And there is something about Trump that is undefined. Trump is no fool, so he must have a plan. Is it he does not want to define it too soon?

I am going the Jonah route too. I am not a big fan of Trump and I am sure as hell never voting for Hillary. I do not support those #NeverTrumpers who say they'll vote for Hillary. If that is being a conservative now a days, count me out of that nonsense too.

    2. As mentioned earlier, I think Jonah's no vote is too convenient, and therefore not that impressive to me. I don't think NR holds the conservative mantle it wishes to claim, but if anyone over there does, then it is Jonah. So, I'm a bit disappointed that he doesn't understand the interest in Trump.

I'm pretty sure I understand the Trump phenomenon fairly well. I thought from the beginning he would win the nomination. He wasn't my preference, but I did think he would get the support that he has mustered. That said, the closest I've heard any public figure get to understand the phenomenon is Rush. I think Rush likes Trump, but I think Rush liked Cruz too, but was pissed when Cruz wouldn't fight. Cruz made the mistake most GOP candidates make when running a nationwide campaign. He hired DC consultants. If you want to call someone cuckservatives; then pick any GOP consultant that has a home and office in DC. By the way, Cruz made other mistakes, and I think that Beck is a big one of those.

  9. Do women "nail" men? My how things have changed. I wasn't going for a sexual metaphor with "nail it" -- I was thinking more Martin Luther.

  10. I need to improve my WFB impression and start reading Trump speeches in Buckley's voice. That would be a great mash-up.
