Adams comment is also worth remembering: "Not an empire, but a Republic, a Republic of laws, not men…while I live let me have a country, a free country…"

    Remember Franklin speaking after another convention some years later: "A Republic, if you can keep it!"

    Signs point to the Republic having already slipped away.
