Zulu



Great movie documenting the events immediately after the battle of Isandlwana (which happened on 22 January 1879). The battle of Roarke's Drift (a mission station just 16 km away) also started that same day. Great performance by Michael Caine playing Lt. Gonville Bromhead back in 1964. 

Victor Davis Hanson: “In the long annals of military history it is difficult to find anything quite like Rorke's Drift, where a beleaguered force, outnumbered forty to one, survived and killed twenty men for every defender lost.” A well disciplined and brave defending force, armed with Martini-Henry rifles explains it. That and the Zulu forces bravely (you could argue suicidially) facing that blistering fire again and again.

    Roarke's Drift was a very close run. It was far worse than shown in the movie. Only the arrival of reinforcements saved the station.

    It was a very good movie. The man who played the Zulu Chieftain, Cetshwayo was a descendant of the man. The Zulu didn't want the fight. The Brits picked it and complained when they got hurt.
